Therapy for Trauma Healing
Just because we can’t see the “injury” doesn’t mean it’s not impacting our lives.
What is Trauma?
According to the American Psychological Association, trauma is defined as an emotional response to a terrible event someone sees or experiences. This could include events such as an accident, abuse, or natural disaster. Immediately after the event, shock and denial are typical. Longer-term reactions include unpredictable emotions, flashbacks, and strained relationships. Even physical symptoms like headaches or nausea can occur.
Some trauma symptoms include:
Avoiding specific locations, sights, situations, and sounds that are reminders of the event
Anxiety, depression, numbness, or guilt
Intrusive thoughts, nightmares, or flashbacks
Anger, irritability, and hypervigilance
Aggressive, reckless behavior, including self-harm
Sleep disturbances
Loss of interest in activities that were once considered enjoyable
Difficulty remembering details of the distressing event
Change in habits or behavior since the trauma
Many people can recover from trauma over time with the love and support of family and friends. While many may bounce back with resiliency. But, others may have effects of lasting trauma. These can cause a person to live with deep emotional pain. Furthermore, it can also result in fear, confusion, or PTSD far after the event has passed. In these cases, the support, guidance, and help of a therapist are vital to healing from trauma.
How can trauma from childhood impact me as an adult?
Trauma looks different for everyone. Childhood trauma results from anything that disrupts a child’s sense of safety. Some instances include an unstable environment, separation from a parent, and serious illness. This also includes intrusive medical procedures, abuse, domestic violence, and neglect.
Trauma can be engraved on your mind and body. Even if you do not remember traumatic events, your physical body has a way of holding onto these traumas. You can recognize this as “triggers” a reminder of past trauma(s). This reminder can cause a person to feel overwhelming sadness, anxiety, or panic. For instance, the traumatic event you experienced may have been a car accident involved with a truck when you were younger. Therefore, as an adult, driving by trucks makes you feel hypervigilant, tense up, or and sweaty until you are far enough away from the truck.
It is important to remember that justifying or ignoring your trauma by saying that “everyone experiences hardships” can be a way to neglect your own healing. Someone else’s trauma may or may not be worse than what you experienced. But, this does not diminish what you’ve gone through.
